At Natural Choice taxidermy products we know that mother natures work is the standard by which all taxidermy products must be judged. Our goal is simply to reproduce what nature has already engineered, our personal preferences and impressions are set aside and only natures guidelines are followed.
Our products start out as actual specimens. They are then molded and the original casts are intensely inspected to ensure they have retained the natural shape and detail of the original. Only a mirror image will do.
The thickness and taper of our ear liners is unsurpassed. While slightly thicker than the actual cartilage our ear liners are still far thinner than any other comparable ear liner available today.
Once it has been verified that an original is truly a mirror image of the original as few changes as possible are made to ensure ease of use for taxidermy purposes. Only 4 things are changed, those changes are as follows.
- In order to increase the durability of our ear liners for commercial applications we have added approximately .00010" of thickness. This effectively doubles the durability of the ear liner.
- Although the original carcass cast has captured the natural veins, they are of course deflated due to lack of blood flow. The veins are plumped and this detail is restored following natures pattern provided by the original carcass cast.
- A small amount of extra width is provided from the widest point of the ear liner to the tip. This gives the taxidermist a wider range of ear shapes that can be reproduced by trimming the ear to match the actual cartilage. (See Selection and sizing of Natural Choice ear liners tutorial)
- The inner ear detail is blended to the blade of the ear to facilitate easier mounting.
The material that we currently use has many advantages over other commercially available ear liners.
- Ease of trimming - no other plastic liner on the market can come close to the ease with which our ear liners can be trimmed. Our ear liners trim as easily as celastic or similar materials yet is far more rigid.
- Durability - A slightly flexible ear liner is far less likely to break than a rigid one. Originally designed for casting fish fins, our material has proven to be an excellent choice for ear liners as well. We have dropped, banged and abused our ear liners enough to know that it is extremely difficult to damage one.
While we are by no means saying they are indestructible but you will have a tough time damaging them in everyday use. - Workability - Natural Choice ear liners are easily trimmed, sanded and filed. This makes them very easy to work with. No more dremel tools and cussing, sandpaper or even steel wool is all you need!
- Malleability - Once heated Natural Choice ear liners can be custom shaped to suit your needs. In only a few minutes you can create a custom look to your mounts ears.
